Do you need a transformer for down lights?
Transformers and LED downlights
MR16 halogen downlights require a transformer for each globe. Most transformers/drivers installed with halogen downlights are rated as either 50 or 60 watts (or VA).
How many transformers do I need for LED lights?
It may not always be possible to use one transformer per fitting due to constraints such as space and cost, so keep this in mind when buying. However, many prefer to use one transformer to power a series of bulbs or light strips (maximum five metres on one transformer).
How many LED lights can I run on one circuit?
CFL bulbs v LED bulbs
Each LED or CFL bulb normally produces the same amount of light as a 60W incandescent bulb while the current it draws is 10 watts or less. Therefore, the current drawn is 1/12 amp. A 15-amp circuit can, therefore, control 180 or more LED or CFL bulbs.
What does the transformer do in downlights?
They convert the voltage from your house’s high power (240v) to low power (12v or 24v) which is safe for the smaller lights. In Australia, most downlights require a transformer, as they come with 240v wiring and the fitting is wired directly into your house’s electrical system.
Why do you need a transformer?
Transformers help improve safety and efficiency of power systems by raising and lowering voltage levels as and when needed. They are used in a wide range of residential and industrial applications, primarily and perhaps most importantly in the distribution and regulation of power across long distances.
Do LED strip lights need a transformer?
LED light strips may be powered with LED drivers, but longer strips should use an LED transformer. Although LED drivers provide a constant output voltage, longer strip lengths require a higher wattage to run at peak efficiency.
How do you know if a light needs a transformer?
So how do you tell if you need to change the transformers? One way is to look at your old halogen bulbs and see if they have pins or pegs to plug them into the power circuit. Basically, pins need a new transformer and pegs do not. But it’s generally a good idea to install an LED driver regardless.
Do LED downlights have transformers?
They will have a transformer either in the ceiling or light fitting. Some LED bulbs, like the Philips Master LED range, have in-built circuitry that can deal with most (but not all) transformers, so you don’t have to change them.
Do LED landscape lights require a special transformer?
In the world of low voltage landscape lighting, LED lamps have also become prevalent. In fact, they have allowed us to create larger lighting systems, often, without the need for larger transformers.
Can you put lights and outlets on the same circuit?
Basic answer to your question of can a mixture of lights and receptacles be installed on a single circuit is yes.
How do you layout downlights?
Try to avoid creating any shadows. Then space your downlights evenly across the room for a balanced look. As a rule of thumb, we suggest you divide your ceiling height by 2 to give you the space required between each downlight. For example if your ceiling is 8 foot high, then position your lights 4 feet apart.
